Разделение героев на «хороших» и «плохих» становится тоньше и неоднозначнее: на смену радикальному противостоянию двух братьев приходит более богатая оттенками конфронтация двух друзей с общим прошлым, в каком-то смысле дарящая нам два разных нравственных портрета одного и того же персонажа. Фильм таким образом становится гимном во славу человеческой воли, потому что именно усилием воли Маклинток свернет с той дороги, которой пойдет Коул, и вступит с ним в смертельную борьбу. Отрицательный (в итоге) персонаж Кеннеди заметно отличается от образа «традиционного злодея», однако довольно долго не теряет ни обаяния, ни зрительских симпатий. Тема нравственного искупления становится невидимым стержнем масштабной и многолюдной эпопеи, действие которой разворачивается в роскошных зеленых пейзажах, красоту и реалистичность которых подчеркивает великолепное цветное изображение.Из всех 5 фильмов здесь насилие, творимое главным героем, рассмотрено с наиболее положительной стороны, а тема мести, которой посвящены последние 20 мин повествования, максимально насыщена нравственными и социальными оправданиями. Заметим, что постановочно эта месть выражена, по большей части, методом умолчания. Из всех 5 воплощений Джеймса Стюарта у Мэнна, кажется, только Маклинтоку удается без задней мысли и без сожалений окончательно превратиться в фермера, влиться в почти окончательно сформировавшийся социум. По всем этим причинам, Излучина реки - самый светлый вестерн Мэнна.
